The Pirates of Penzance is a comic opera in two acts. The official premiere of the show was in New York on 31st December 1879, and is one of the most frequently played G&S operas.

The story concerns Frederic, who, having completed his 21st year, is released from his apprenticeship to a band of pirates. He meets Mabel, the daughter of Major-General Stanley, and they instantly fall in love. Frederic finds out that he was born on the 29th February, and so, technically has a birthday only every 4 years. His indentures state that he remains apprenticed to the pirates until his 21st birthday, and so he must serve for another 63 years. Bound by his own sense of duty, Frederics only solace is that Mabel agrees to wait for him.
